Well, it has been f-o-r-e-v-e-r since I’ve been out on one of these adventures! They all started as a way to get out and shoot while making that time a little more exciting for my kids and as a way to explore our new hometown after a few years back in Wisconsin.
After way too many weeks of not finding the time to shoot with hectic school and nap schedules to adhere to and general lack of cooperation from the little ones, I ended up hiring a sitter one day a week for a few hours so I could get out and actually accomplish something. While that was a difficult decision for me it’s been SO worthwhile!
For the most part I’ve been trying to focus on the projects I have percolating and have been in the mood to work on my From the ‘L’ series lately. This week I was a bit delayed in getting out and had to be back earlier than usual so I only ended up with about 40 minutes of shooting, better than nothing, right?!
I ended up doing a small portion of the Sculptures in the Loop card. There are so many wonderfully interesting pieces of artwork in, what seems like, Chicago’s outdoor sculpture museum. Many I’ve walked by and photographed in the past, the Chicago Picasso, Joan Miro’s Chicago, Jean Dubuffet’s Monument with Standing Beast, Chagall’s Four Seasons, to name a few. But there are others I’ve either never noticed or simply never photographed.
I only managed two sculptures on Tuesday, Alexander Calder’s The Flamingo and Sol Lewitt’s Lines in Four Directions, but hope to get to the other few I’m not as familiar with over the next few weeks.
And if you have any interest in checking out some of the most famous sculptures for yourself here’s a guide that might make it a bit easier.
If you have interesting photos of any of Chicago’s sculptures or some that you recommend seeing, I’d love to see and hear about them!
