I’m back at Chicago Photography Classes (CPC) to teach a 7-week class on creating series from architectural subjects. Each week we photograph one location. Pushing ourselves to see each space in a comprehensive way. Whether the intent is to focus on one aspect of the building in detail or give a wider overview of the space.
On this visit I primarily photographed detailed shots of the exterior and interior. There were a number of ways I could have created a series but for the purposes of the class I chose 6 images – 3 exterior, 3 interior. My intent was to show the transparency, 3-dimensionality and 2-dimensionality of the exterior and then pairing that up with images from the interior wall that mimicked the shapes of those exterior shots.
You’ll notice the exterior shots are all in color and the interior in black & white. While I like the B&W versions of the exteriors I preferred the blue sky reflecting in the glass and the interior the focus was on the shapes, which was more strongly emphasized by the B&W processing. This also adds a way to separate to the two spaces.
And a bunch of other shots. I didn’t pair these in series but could very well create their own in other ways.
I preferred these next two in color…

And a random…
