The final stop before we were back in Chicago was a last minute addition. We were driving through Iowa City and checked to see if there was anything interesting to see. We came across the Steven Holl designed Visual Arts building on the University of Iowa campus. It was a pretty gray, gloomy day but still stopped to make a few abstracts, both inside and out. I started inside and liked how the warmth from the lights created this soft tone on the walls and stairways, which contrasted nicely the blue hues of the mesh ceiling.
Of course I couldn’t pass up a couple black & white versions of this space.
The outside of the building has all these different cutouts which makes for some nice interplay between the various levels, creating very geometric forms.
