Chicago workshop

It’s time for the next Chicago workshop!

Spend 3 full days exploring the best the city has to offer – old & new, interiors & exteriors, skyscrapers, sculptures and much in between. The focus will be on creating detailed and abstract interpretations of the city’s built environment, day and night.

A few days before we meet in person, we’ll come together for an online presentation with tips on composition. Once the in-person portion wraps, I’ll share a post-processing tutorial with you. You’ll have a couple of weeks to work on your images and then we’ll meet up online once again for a review session of each participant’s work.

PRESENTATION: Monday, May 15, 8pm CT

REVIEW SESSION: Wednesday, May 31, 8pm CT

Weekend Highlights

These are just some of the locations we’ll see. A more detailed itinerary will be sent out a couple of weeks prior to us meeting in-person.

Why Attend?

  • Learn to see architecture with clear, actionable tips that you can apply during the workshop, and come home with portfolio-worthy images.
  • Get individualized attention in this small group format; workshop is limited to 10 participants.
  • Learn to shoot without complicated settings or techniques so you can improve your images in a single weekend, even if you’ve never shot architecture before.
  • Learn post-processing techniques for architecture so you can save time in front of the computer.
  • Improve your entire creative process from shooting to post-processing and get your images noticed!
  • Create amazing images with on-location guidance and feedback and win competitions!
  • Learn in the best conditions without having to worry about the logistics of a big city.
  • Get inspired by world-class architecture so you can take your images to the next level.
  • Connect with like-minded people and build lasting friendships.

What You'll See...

Gear

We’ll be walking A LOT (about 4 miles/day)! Please be prepared with good shoes, water, snacks and travel light!

Friday and Saturday we will be inside museums – THEY DO NOT ALLOW BACKPACKS (unless you’re willing to check them or they’re small and you can wear them on the front of you). So, I recommend a good crossbody bag or be willing to check your backpack at each location.

I recommend a mid-range zoom around the 24-70mm range + a 70-200mm telephoto (the telephoto will be likely be your most used lens). If you’d like to bring an additional lens, a wide angle, 12-24mm range, may be useful in a couple of locations (most notably the museum staircases).

We will use tripods on both Friday and Saturday night but will stop back at the hotel to retrieve them. You will NOT have to carry them all day. Our meeting and ending point each day will be the hotel – The Club Quarters Hotel, Wacker at Michigan. Even if you are not staying at the hotel, I’m sure those that are will store your tripod until the evening shoots.
